Portugese in New Zealand Aotearoa

In the Colony of New Zealand in April 1881 there were 207 born in ‘Portugal (including the Azores, Cape de Verd, and Madeira)’. Only 19 were women.

Contemporary records have been brought together by the author to create a scrapbook on their lives in this country.

Wellington author Hilda McDonnell is an amateur historian with an interest in unusual New Zealand social history stories.

Her first book, The Publicans of Port Nicholson, featuring the first days of Wellington’s licensed establishments, has been reprinted several times.
